    16 Grants Support Local Schools

Winters Education Foundation is pleased to announce that, through the generosity of local donors, they have awarded 16 mini-grants to teachers in Winters schools for enrichment activities and materials. The grants range up to $2,000 each and total more than $15,500.

Thanks to these grants, kindergarten students will make clay creations with a visiting artist, students in grades 6-8 will create a mosaic mural for their school, and high school students will be able to record tracks in a music production studio. The grants will
support several field trips: second graders will explore the UC Davis student farm, fourth graders will go to the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park in Coloma, and fifth graders will visit the Exploratorium in San Francisco. Other grants will fund classroom materials and build school libraries.

According to Rody Boonchouy, Superintendent of Schools, “One of the best things about Winters is how this community shows up for our kids. Each year the Winters Educational Foundation steps up in a big way through teacher mini-grants — helping bring field trips to life, add art and science projects to classrooms, and give students hands-on experiences they’ll never forget.”

    Remembering Russ Lester

The Winters Education Foundation is saddened by the passing of Board Member Russ Lester.

The Winters community lost a giant of a man who was a firm believer in the importance of public education and worked tirelessly to support our Winters schools. By serving 20 years on the Winters JUSD Board of Trustees, over 10 years on our board, volunteering and demonstrating equipment at Farm Day and hosting class tours of his ranch, Russ backed up his beliefs with action. We offer sincere condolences to Russ’ family and friends.

  • Grants Support 12 Projects at Winters Schools

Grants Support 12 Projects at Winters Schools

Winters Education Foundation (WEF) awarded 12 grants totaling over $9,000 to support equal educational opportunities for every child in Winters public school classrooms. The grants, awarded as part of WEF’s annual Mini-Grant program, were made possible due to generous gifts from members of the Winters community, many of whom donated to WEF during Big Day of Giving in May.

Because of the community’s generosity, WEF was able to award $9,032 to help fund 13 projects proposed by educators throughout Winters Joint Unified School District, many reflecting the challenges encountered by students and educators recovering from pandemic-era schooling.

Examples of the projects funded include science play materials to engage young learners at Winters State Preschool Center; tools to introduce Waggoner Elementary School students to coding and robotics; culturally relevant books to enrich language arts instruction at Shirley Rominger Intermediate Schools; physical education equipment at Winters Middle School; and technology to enhance math classes at Winters High School.

WEF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Its mission is to support excellence in the Winters public schools by raising the necessary funds to help the schools, and each year, WEF sponsors grants to help local educators provide much-needed materials and experiences for Winters students.

Mini-Grants are funded entirely by gifts from area businesses and private citizens.

Winters Schools Receive $30,000 Through Community-Funded Grants

Winters Education Foundation is pleased to announce that, through the generosity of local donors, we have awarded 28 Mini-Grants totaling nearly $30,000 to support equal educational opportunities for every child in Winters public school classrooms this year.

The funded projects were proposed by educators throughout Winters Joint Unified School District, and many reflected the challenges encountered by students and teachers during pandemic-era schooling.

Examples of the projects funded include:

    • Outdoor play equipment to engage young learners at Winters State Preschool Center,
    • Tools to introduce Waggoner Elementary School students to coding and robotics,
    • Ukuleles to expand music instruction at Shirley Rominger Intermediate Schools,
    • Scholarships to outdoor education camp for sixth and seventh graders at Winters Middle School, and
    • Technology to enhance math classes at Winters High School.

Of course, none of WEF’s work would be possible without this community’s generosity.

Thanks to our supporters, WEF has been able to bring important resources to Winters students, families, and educators during a difficult year. Together, we have helped ease the strain of returning to in-classroom instruction after more than a year of distance learning.
